I have had the pleasure of staying at some of the nicest boutique hotels in Sri Lanka, and the displeasure of staying at many mid-range for profit businesses. Let me just point out a few of the positives.||1. The Fence is run by a hardworking, honest, kind family who create an atmosphere of home. They take great pride in the appearance...from the landscaping to the teacups, everything is cared for well. The rooms spare no expense at providing a comfortable atmosphere with an aesthetic and cleanliness unmatched by guest houses in this range.||2. The owner has a wealth of experience in the tourist industry in Sri Lanka and takes no part in the usual ways to add extra charges or take advantage of his clientele. The son is a bright young man who is both a pleasure to speak to and a great host. There is even the cute babble of a toddler to brighten your breakfast. ||3. Location.....I have stayed in the beach in Bentota, on the lake, and in the town...this location is none of those...It is far enough from town to get away from the normal tourist junk, yet close enough to access banks, stores, etc. An unspoiled beach is a short walk away. From my balcony I have seen mongoose, parrots, monkeys, and local life...smiling children and hardworking families.||...The food is excellent, just be clear of your wishes and they will accommodate. I expressed that I prefer Sri Lankan food and that is what I got. The owner even went daily to the fish market to provide the freshest ingredients....||Last caveat....this is not a place to party, make noise, complain, or make a mess. It is a home to be treated like a home...if you intend to act foolish on vacation, I would suggest one of the larger hotels in town. ||I fear leaving such a good review will mean it will be booked on my next trip.....but honestly, this place deserves my highest rating.||
Well what can I say apart from my first visit to Sri Lanka was AMAZING!!! We stayed at The Fence near bentota and we could not have been looked after any better. The family are so welcoming and friendly and they attend to your every need with the warmest smiles!!! Anything you needed they would sort out for you and have great knowledge about any yours or visits that you want to do. |The day was always started off in the best possible way with a fantastic breakfast that set you up for the day. It was great being able to try some traditional Sri Lankan breakfast items!! |If you needed taking anywhere, they’d contact the lovely Tuk tuk driver Amith who would tend to your every need taking us to beaches, temples, shopping and of course our in the evenings. |If you want a holiday that is relaxing with that warm homely feeling then there is no other place to go. Dolitha, Eranga, Galleen and Diana are the perfect hosts and made our first trip to Sri Lanka so memorable and have made us want to go back next year for certain for a longer holiday. Please make sure you look this place up when you go to Sri Lanka as you won’t be disappointed and it will make your holiday!!!
Family run very beautiful and clean BNB. Near Beach. good Wifi. Walking distance to Indian Ocean! Great connections and tours around Sri Lanka. I got to know many local people who are Tuk Tuk drivers, tour guides and even seamstresses! I learned cooking from a yoga teacher! I have been visiting this establishment for 5 years!!!!
We stayed one night at this guest house that we can highly recommend. The Fence is located in a beautiful rural setting and as you sit on the the deck of you room you look at the lush vegetation and the birds. Our rom was clean and very spacious with hot water.||This facility is operated by a family and our interaction was mainly with the adult children but we did meet the parents and the grandparents. They are very friendly and provide a very good service to their guests. We enjoyed spending time talking with them.||We ate a tasty rice and curry for our evening meal. Even though we were leaving early in the morning they prepared an excellent breakfast.||We loved the setting and it is not a long walk to the beautiful beaches of the area.
We spent two nights with Dolitha and his family in this tastefully appointed home stay in the lush jungle, a short stroll from the beach. Nothing was too much trouble and we were welcomed as if we were part of this lovely family. Dolitha took us on an excellent Jeep tour of the local villages, giving us some real insights into how people live and work in this area. Our only regret is that we couldn’t stay longer to take advantage of the more extensive safari tours that Dolitha also runs. HIGHLY recommend!
My stay lasted three weeks. Thank you, to the wonderful team, for the homely atmosphere, cleanliness and delicious food. Sure, it's worth returning to this wonderful house. At your request, there are lunches and delicious suppers. Dolitha, a true guru of his case, with experience of twenty-five years of work in the field of tourism. Fence, is in the exotic jungle. (Jungle, they will meet you with their cordiality). I recommend, everyone, this option. Do not forget to say thank you.
the worst experience in Srilanka was the stay at this place. Very disappointing indeed! The beds are terribly uncomfortable and the bathrooms are the kinds that you wouldn't want to use...like ever. The only think good was the breakfast that was freshly made. Rest the place is full of deadly insects and termites. So simply put, avoid!
After the unpleasant situation that we didn´t got the room we booked (unfortunately the owner didn´t tell it us upon arrival and we had to inform him), we spent three nights in a double room for the lower rate. The room was clean, but in all not the standard we looked for. The owner was friendly and provided a lot of helpful tips. The breakfast was very good! ||||In all a nice "home stay", though we wouldn´t have booked the room if we had known that there was a "double booking" for the apartment we actually selected.
Room was spacious and clean. Everything inside was new and in good condition. Place is located in a countryside about 1 km from the beach and few kms from the center of Bentota. Owners were nice and helpful in arranging transfers and trips. Everything for reasonable price. Thank you Dolitha. Magda&Przemek
