The name evokes images of James Earl Jones (Alex Haley) on his quest of his origins; instead, we have an angelic faced chef, who is seemingly let out of his playpen with his loaded palette to paint out his bodacious menu. Not just any menu, but one that delves into local produce for its taste and flavor and intertwined with various culinary arts.
The MENU consists of simply Menu & Desserts: no delineation of courses, or order in the menu; they are more like conversation pieces to be consumed when you while away your time in the gallery. These are uncharted territorial boundaries for the palate, which Chef John so boldly teases us with unimaginable choices of paring the ingredients. Let's be beguiled!

The food is beyond amazing. It’s mindblowing!! I would say it’s one of the best western fusion cuisine in Kuching! The pasta here is really out of the world! The price is pricey but for the quality of the food, I must say you must try it once in your life!! The paella is very small portion but I love the crisp. If you enjoy eating good quality food and willing to spend, it’s a must try!

Seafood Pasta
I was a little skeptical before going there, but I left this place with a smile on my face!
We ordered fried chicken and fish tacos to start, seafood paella and the catch of the day - grilled seabass in our case - for the mains, and both ice creams for desserts. Each one came with perfectly paired and carefully selected sauces that wildly enhanced the dishes.
Who would've thought that we would have our best paella and ice cream (citrus) in Borneo?! If you like sour, I couldn't recommend the citrus ice-cream enough - it was phenomenal. Also highly recommend the fish tacos, as well as the seabass/fried chicken for their sauces.
Towards the end, the chef personally came to greet us and explained (upon asking) how they prepared the dishes and especially the sauces. All sourced locally from Borneo, some from mainland Malaysia.
Update: The citrus ice cream was so good that we ended up going there again two days later. To my surprise, it was better the second time (perfect temperature since we ate it as soon as it came out; we were chatting with the chef the first time).

Easy reservation.Friendly and helpful staff that explains the dish thoroughly. Price is on the higher end. Food presentation is superb, they know what theyre doing.
Brioche with Seaweed Butter and Tomato Soup
5/5
Everything just melts together in my mouth. Setting the expectation high. Actually my favorite out of the whole meal.
Striploin steak with Truffle and Sunchoke
4/5
Never thought truffle oil can combine so well with sunchoke, savory and sweet. The meat is a bit tough, though. Maybe because its striploin. But it is actually medium, unlike other steaks around here.
Prawn Paella with Squid Ink Rice
3/5
I expected whole prawn rather than batter fried, but still ok. Deep flavors on the squid ink rice. Wife said the sauce+lemon combination is refreshing.
Citrus Ice Cream with Cranberries
4/5
Wife said its too sour, but I think its fine. Interesting texture play.
Overall its a good experience. Plus point on the baby chair, really stylish.

RM600+ dinner for two.
I was greeted by this gentleman which later gave us a wonderful time during our dining with experience with roots.
Remarkable 4.5/5 service.
However, the portion of the food was surprisingly small. Taste wise wasn't that phenomenal, food wise doesn't have any premium quality protein nor expensive Ingrediant.
River prawn paella was an absolute disappointment in my opinion.
Their Coconut ice cream is memorable one, a balance taste with different elements and texture.
Simplicity meets complexity.
2.5/5 for the food.
Ambience was nothing much but timber and some dim lights. Quite boring. But they do have some unqie piece of antique for you to enjoy.
3/5
Dinner was done and we left the place with hungry stomach and my crying wallet. But still we enjoyed our evening at roots.

Very interesting set meal on a Valentines Day course. Food is exceptional with exquisite tastes that will blow your taste buds in and out of Kuching (figure of speech). It is on the higher end side in terms of price and don’t expect the food to come in huge quantities but do expect to be filled just enough by the end of it. Very helpful staff service also. Tend to hard sell on drinks though. Just a personal opinion.
I’m not sure what to say about this place. I wanted it to be good but it fell very short of expectations. Ordered fish taco, lamb taco, tomato salad and a seafood paella. Fish fillet was well seasoned but the guacamole sauce was so salty I couldn’t even tell it was avocado. It took a lot of courage to finish the fish taco. The lamb taco was also very salt, I can tell there was a lot in the lamb rendang but it was just too salty to taste any other spices and flavour.
Thank goodness we had the tomato salad to cleanse the palate between the tacos and the paella.the salad was the only dish we could eat without any struggle.
The seafood paella, supposedly the signature dish was disappointing. The flavour of the rice was very good but the seafood again simply had too much salt in it. The seafood was very salty.
The dishes are all very pretty but flavours are ruined by the amount of salt in them. Looks fine dining but definitely taste far from it. Even the menus were torn and tattered!
3stars for effort both for chef and service staff.

Came here for a birthday celebration, food was extremely interesting every flavour have their unique taste. Food was 3-4stars however their customer service UPZ totally worth the 5stars very attentive , manager was super friendly and helpful to our needs,he settle all the arrangements for 7pax of us, really appreciated.
7pax for 3 course meal for around rm1300++ really don mind paying that much for their services.
Had three courses that's exquisitely presented of which I have nothing but praise for. I was really impressed by the very flavorful range of sauces that were perfectly complemented our lovely meal. The restaurant is beautifully clean and the layout is just right. Service was good, the staff were more than helpful, attentive and friendly. My compliments to the manageress Rain who has done an excellent job of putting it on its feet! and not to forget, the bartender that have served us Boyd did an amazing job! Frankly speaking, the food first rate and probably most pleasing was the final bill. Not cheap but certainly not over the top. We felt that this was a restaurant we would come back to and be happy to recommend others to go to. My brother and I really enjoyed our visit, and will definitely be back. Thank you Rain, for making our little treat into a lovely experience. The place is top notch!
