You hear the sizzling wok increasing in crescendo as the oil heats up quickly, the sound loudens suddenly as bits and pieces of ingredients are thrown into the wok, followed by the constant clanging of steel ladle against the well worn wok. The air begins to fill with aromatic smoke blanketing the small restaurant like clouds in heaven: and you know you are in food paradise run by a ‘master’ chef! She expertly cooked up a storm learned over 50 years.
This unassuming kitchen in Kampung Baru, Bukit Mertajam has served regular customers since the 1970s. It’s down to earth home cook dishes rival any other starred restaurants by virtue of its great taste alone. No it’s not instagrammable, it’s not social media hyped but it’s as authentic as what Chinese home cooked meals ought to be.
The 3 of us ordered 5 simple dishes:
Assam prawns had the superb balance of sweetness, sourness and tangy tamarind coating the fresh shrimps, the tofu/ bean curd was soft and silky topped with minced meat, even the humble bean sprouts were crunchy, sweet and enhanced with just the right amount of salted fish. We couldn’t get enough of the cook’s skills and ordered extras! Simple egg with minced pork was fluffy and soft, while the ginger pork had the right dash of sesame.

If you like Chinese home-cooked food, this is the place to be. Their cooking was excellent, and most of their dishes were a delight to taste. We ordered the garoupa steam fish, honey-glazed fried prawns, fu yong egg, vege and soup. No MSG detected, and most of the dishes were served at one go. Pricing was reasonable and there's ample parking space along the road.

First time here… the chef is an aunty. The Flower Crab dish is excellent!! Uncle said this is one of their signature dishes… overall great dining place but must willing to wait as only one lady chef…
