Quaint little whale themed cafe serving up quality drip coffee. I had the (Colombia Cauca Finca El Paraiso Double Anaerobic Flor Lichi) (170TWD) and it might be one of my favourite filter coffees I’ve ever tried - you could taste the floral and lychee notes with an after taste of sugar sweetness, well brewed. The beans were so good I bought a bag home. The cups all had whales on the handle and the coffee comes with a small homemade whale shaped butter cookie 🐋
She even gave me a little cup of the Ethiopian drip coffee to try, 10/10 for the hospitality :)

A cool coffee in the middle of a busy street. I really enjoyed the small cost and welcoming place, and the connection with whales is interesting also you can find some nice gifts.

Great little cafe. Coffee is good. Very nice staff. Free wifi. Upstairs seating by the window or small balcony at street level. Could spend hours sitting here enjoying the ambience. Bonus points for being a bike friendly cafe!
Small but very cozy coffeeshop serving fantastic coffee. The ideal spot to relax and escape from the bustling shopping streets of Hualien. The sour-sweet explosions of the lemon slices they serve were a pleasant and original surprise - definitely worth a try.
Lovely (real!) coffee served with a gentleness not found everywhere. Enjoyed the cheese sandwich and banana bread, both delicious and make with love. The home made coffee bean chocolate is a dish!
The coffee varieties here are craft-roasted 'in shop' by the owner. As of a foreign person who has lived here for a long time, I can attest that the coffee here is among the best in Hualien.
The coffees here can give you respite from typical Taiwanese brews. If you've visited coffee shops in Taiwan, you might be confused and have wondered why 'sour' coffee brews are ubiquitously popular in Taiwan.
Taiwanese fears that overly roasted beans may be prepared so that the bitter roasting may hide the flavors of low quality beans.
Lightly roasted 'sour' brews have become popular as way to let customers feel assured of quality. The result is that coffee drinkers go from bitter to sour roasts.
Black Whale Coffee offers a few roasts that hit the middle: smoother and more mellow.
Still, if you want a smooth blend you have to ask for it.
Below is the translation to help you.
我想要一杯口感順滑,不苦或酸的咖啡。謝謝。
"I would like a cup of coffee with a smooth flavor, not bitter or sour. Thank you."
Cheers!
small little cafe and it's a great place to chill. Hand crafted coffee tastes really great as well. It was a rainy morning when I was there last time which made the vibe even better. I recommend to pay a visit when you are around the neighborhood.
This is a most charming place with excellent coffee (try the Black Whale Coffee -- it is a surprise explosion of taste if you like the combination of bitter lemon, lemon juice and divine iced espresso). One of the highlights, if not the highlight of our visit in Hualien.
Ordered a chocolate brownie. Surprisingly they served it with ice cream, the way it should be served. Quite a small shop. They have different tourism catalogue for customers and tourists, which i think is good way to promote city tourism and the name itself says "black whale cafe". As hualien is famous for whale watching.
