The recipe for success of this restaurant is its nicely cooked fried chicken, mac-n-cheese and fried seafood. After a long working week, you can taste good wine. When visiting Bertha's Kitchen, try great ice tea. Visitors don't highly appreciate bread pudding at this place. This spot is famous for its great service and friendly staff, that is always ready to help you. Based on the reviewers' opinions, prices are affordable. Most of the time, this restaurant provides you with the comfortable atmosphere. Google users awarded Bertha's Kitchen 4.6.

The James Beard Award should let you know what you are in for. This was the ultimate southern food. Everything was off the charts. This was my first but not my last trip. The fried chicken was fresh out of the fryer and was the best I’ve ever had. The okra soup was good on it’s on and the mac and cheese was just like my grandma used to make. The red rice was also fantastic. Meal type Lunch Price per person $10–20 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Recommended dishes Fried Chicken Leg and Thigh

When my Wife and I looked up best Southern Food in South Carolina this was the first place to pop up, And once we tasted the food we can see why! The Fried Chicken was amazing, the Crab Balls were amazing, the Corn Bread was amazing, both the Seafood Rice and Red Rice was amazing, pretty much everything we tasted was amazing 😂 The drinks were gigantic! And they brought the food upstairs to our table, definitely recommend going here if you want some real good southern food! Food was just ok. Pork chop was fresh and breading was good. It and the sweet tea earned the two stars. Mac and cheese was a mushy mess. Lima beans lacked salt and beans it was mainly just juice. Red rice was dry and lacked seasoning and corn bread was dense. Staff were not welcoming at all! I did not enjoy the experience or the food. I would recommend looking else where I’m sure Charleston has better to offer than this. I wish I hadn’t wasted my one Charleston meal here. Fried pork chop was on point, as usual. The butter beans are more like a soup and have so much flavor, as did the cabbage. Sweet tea is sweet, but that’s how it’s supposed to be made. ❣️ Service Dine in Meal type Lunch Price per person $10–20 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 4

This unassuming local favorite has a homey country diner atmosphere, delivered in a meat and three format (an entree plus two sides and a rice dish). I can unequivocally recommend their crab balls - they were delicious! On Saturdays they have a fried seafood platter that is full stop amazing, you get a ton of great food (crab balls, scallops, fish, oysters, shrimp) that is relatively inexpensive! Just simply Love this place!! When I lived and worked in Charleston I would have lunch here everyday. I had the pleasure to meet Mrs. Bertha back then and some of the family. I live in Florida now and my wife and kids fell in love with this restaurant too, every chance when visiting this is our soul food go to place! Never disappointed!! Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
Visiting Charleston and wanted to try more local small business eats this time instead of eating downtown battery area. I’m well versed in soul food. I google searched for best fried chicken in Charleston and Bertha’s popped up first in an article for some of Charlestons best. Basically you go up to the counter and there is food resting in hot pans you choose what you want and food is scooped from pans and placed in to go containers. Staff kind of treat everyone like they are regulars so they don’t ask any questions or give suggestions or anything for instance I ordered fried chicken, Lima beans, rice and cabbage, I wasn’t given an option if I wanted white or dark meat so I assumed I would get mixed chicken. (The chicken was not out in the hot pans). I also love seafood so I tried a side cup of a seafood trio which included Tilapia, shrimp and scallops. The chicken was not mixed but a leg quarter that was very poorly cooked and greasy, Lima beans seasoned well but definitely not a fan of the pig tails that was mixed with the beans. Would have definitely preferred smoked ham hocks or smoked turkey has an option, the tails super soggy, very unappetizing to even look at, the cabbage was good and the seafood trio which was seasoned very well however it was over cooked scallops so dry. Unfortunately I tossed my 25.00 dollar meal and headed to Popeyes something I can get any day of the week. I was let down by Charleston thinking this is the best fried chicken in town.

On vacation and googled soul food is how we found it. Food is served to you cafeteria style, you just pick what is on the daily menu. I had a fried pork chop sandwich with yams and Mac and cheese as my sides. Everything was fresh and overall good except the Mac and cheese lacked seasoning. The lemonade was perfect. We dined in and you go back to the counter and get anything such as napkins and or silverware. There are no waitresses or waiters. Service Dine in Meal type Lunch Food: 4 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 3
