After having been to the roof top restaurant for a couple of times we decided to try Belian for dinner since we find the menu at Cavakita too restrictive with only a few main dishes on offer. We went, however, for a pre dinner drink to the roof top bar and found the area all wet and uninviting. Even moderate rain with a bit of wind renders the whole outside seating area unusable. We ordered a Negroni and Margarita and sat inside the restaurant. The drink quality was good but service was lacklustre with no cocktail napkins or bar nibbles offered. A few expat guests on the way down in the lift mentioned they were going over to Ming’s as they found it too boring in the hotel. Apart from one couple, we were the only guests in Belian Restaurant. The staff did their best to decorate the table, however we ended up being the only diners and the atmosphere was somewhat lacking. We sampled the 4 course set menu. The prawn bisque with Sauerkraut was an interesting combination but enjoyable. The Cesar Salad was excellent with the usual anchovies substituted by local crispy fried Tahai fish. The main course was beef or lamb with beef being the better choice. The chocolate mousse was a better choice than the lemon flan which was too sticky. Service was excellent with Jasper and Hui Ming doing their very best. Especially Jasper’s hospitality stood out as he recognised us from previous visits and addressed us by name and really showcased true Sarawak friendliness. The set menu at RM 200.00 offers very little value for money. There is no bread and butter offered nor coffee or tea. The total bill including cocktails and a bottle of wine came to RM 800.00 over for 2 persons. This is a price point of a 5star hotel in KL. With continued training on the culinary and service side there is potential to close the gap between the actual experience and the marketing promise.
