We had an amazing rum tasting experience by our wonderful hosts Raven and Priscilla! HIGHLY recommend trying and learning about different rums. Also a lovely collection of wine, coffees and teas :)
I can't say enough good things about Bajo el Sol and the space these owners have created. The rum selection is impressive, the prices are reasonable, the food is delicious, and the vibe is perfectly chill. Don't miss the empanadas or the chocolate truffles! I was also excited about the range of books for sale and the titles featured.
Most importantly, this establishment is not just aware of the complex racial dynamics and horrific past of St. John. This space honors that history; respects Black histories and a range of Black and Brown voices; and speaks openly about the current race and wealth dynamics of the Carribean. I wanted to purchase bottles of rum, but I need to know about the labor conditions and business practices of the producers to feel comfortable doing so. The staff and owners at Bajo el Sol weren't just tolerant of my questions. They were pleased to receive questions, and they provided thorough answers. These folks know their history and do their research. It seems to be an establishment that has earned respect in the community, and the events it hosts support local artists. The whole gallery and bar space is upscale without being pretentious or off-putting.
The books, rum, art, and friendly staff at Bajo el Sol were a highlight of our visit, and my desire to return to/support this business will draw me back to the island. Extra thanks to Raven and David, who made our rum tastings and shopping experience so enjoyable on so many levels.
Bajo el Sol Gallery sells a wonderful collection of locally made pottery, paintings, baskets, jewelry, sculpture, wood carvings, and more. I had an absolutely delicious iced dirty chai. There was a selection of pastries and sandwiches when I was there.
My daughter, and I had a wonderful rum tasting! We did the saver the flavor tasting and fell in love with the Chai rum. Lauren, our lovely sommalier, gave us the history of the flavors, and how best to enjoy each room. And, you were able to take a bottle home!
Amazing time at Bajo El Sol gallery. Not only found the best coffee in town, but also a cool vibe place with an amazing Rum selection . The friendly owners and staff were wonderful and shared stories about rum origins and making from different places around Central America and Caribbean. We went back the next day for live music and rum tasting. Gallery and jewelry are beautiful too. Don’t miss it!
Great find. My wife wanted to try some rum’s and so we ordered “Ravens Choice” and we got to meet Raven.
This was a great experience. She explained details of the origin and processes used to make each of the rum’s. She is very knowledgeable and super fun! The rum is amazing with some 250 +/- different rum’s and a staff that knows every one of them.
Wonderful store and rum bar. Do yourself a favor and stop by…enjoy a flight and learn about Caribbean rum. Yum!

On our anniversary trip to St. Thomas, Steve and I took a day trip over to St. John and stumbled across this lovely gem. The gorgeous local art work drew us in, but the rum tasting had us stay a while longer! The owners and staff were great conversationalists and we found that one of the baristas is another Philly/Delaware connection. The rum was incredible and service impeccable. We bought a piece of art to have sent home and were told it would arrive in about 10 days. It arrived the very next day before we even returned home! Definitely recommend stopping in to this lovely shop if you are near Cruz Bay in St John.
